The Taj Mahal (India)
The Taj Mahal is an ivory-white marble mausoleum in the Indian city of Agra. The construction was started in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to house the tomb of his favourite wife Mumtaz Mahal. This monument is considered one of the greatest architectural achievements in Indian culture. When it was first established, craftsmen across the empire worked during construction. The marble inside the monument was highly polished and precious stones and materials were used.
Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum (China)
This mausoleum was built between 1926 and 1929. It has a white marble statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the first president of the Republic of China. The marble coffin is placed in the hall. When you see from the above, the mausoleum resembles a massive alarm bell.
The Statue of David (Italy)
David is a masterpiece of renaissance sculpture made from marble between 1501 and 1504 by Michelangelo. This is widely regarded as the best sculpture ever created. This work of art was created during the renaissance and depicts the biblical hero David. Due to the nature of the figure it represented, the statue became to symbolize the defence of civil liberty in Florence.
Leaning Tower of Pisa (Italy)
This is another tall monument made from marble. It is one of the most remarkable architectural structures from medieval Europe. It stands at 60 metres and until 1990 it was leaning at about 10 degrees angle. It is constructed from white marble. The tower has eight stories including the chamber for the bells.
Parthenon (Greece)
The Parthenon is a former temple in Greece dedicated to the goddess Athena. The Parthenon is regarded as a symbol of ancient Greece and Western Civilisation. Marble was extensively used in this monument. The design of this artwork inspired other buildings.
The Washington Monument (the US)
This monument was made as an obelisk and three different marble types were used. This historical attraction is one of the most widely visited monuments in all of the United States. This artifact was built to honour George Washington, the first president of the United States. Its height is 169.35 metres. It was designed by Robert Mills to make it look similar to the Egyptian Obelisk. It was the tallest monument when it was first completed.
